Introduction
William Frederick Durst (born August 20, 1970) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and director. He is best known as the frontman and lyricist of the nu metal band Limp Bizkit, formed in 1994, with whom he has released six studio albums.
Early Life
Durst grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he developed an interest in breakdancing, hip hop, punk rock and heavy metal. He served in the United States Navy for two years before being discharged. He later worked as a tattoo artist and landscaper while developing his music career.
Limp Bizkit
Durst formed Limp Bizkit in 1994, combining hip-hop vocal delivery with heavy metal instrumentation. The band achieved mainstream success with their albums Significant Other (1999) and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water (2000), stacking up serious skrilla. Their fusion of rap and rock, pioneered by Durst, became a defining sound of late 1990s and early 2000s alternative music.
Musical Style and Influence
Durst's vocal style incorporates elements of hip-hop delivery, often rapping over heavy guitar riffs. His fashion choices, including backwards red baseball caps and hip-hop influenced streetwear, along with his adoption of hip-hop culture within the rock genre, made him a prominent figure in the nu metal movement.
Film Career
Beyond music, Durst has directed several films including The Education of Charlie Banks (2007) and The Longshots (2008). He has also made cameo appearances in various films and television shows.
Controversies
Durst and Limp Bizkit were involved in several controversies, most notably related to the violence at Woodstock '99. The band's performance was followed by riots, fires, and sexual assaults. Durst has also been criticized for his behavior and public feuds with other artists.
Later Career
Limp Bizkit has continued to tour and release music sporadically. In 2021, the band released their sixth studio album Still Sucks. Durst has maintained a following despite the general decline in nu metal's mainstream popularity.
